Entrepreneurship Education and Financial Insecurity in Nigeria: Empowering Individuals for Economic Resilience

Abstract

Financial insecurity poses significant challenges to individuals and communities in Nigeria, perpetuating poverty, income inequality, and limited opportunities for economic progress. Entrepreneurship education has emerged as a potential solution to mitigate the effects of financial insecurity by equipping individuals with the skills, knowledge, and mindset needed to start and sustain businesses. Hence, this paper explored the role of entrepreneurship education in reducing financial insecurity among the populace by empowering individuals for economic resilience in Nigeria. The paper specifically sought to examine the factors that contribute to financial insecurity in Nigeria, ascertain the roles of entrepreneurship education in addressing financial insecurity, investigate the challenges and barriers faced in implementing entrepreneurship education in Nigeria, and propose strategies for integrating entrepreneurship education into the Nigerian educational system to equip individuals with the necessary skills and mindset to navigate economic challenges, create sustainable businesses, and foster economic resilience. The paper used qualitative content analysis as its method of data analysis. Secondary data was gathered based on the findings in existing literature. It was revealed that the factors that induced financial insecurity were; unemployment, poverty, economic instability, and income inequality. It was also revealed that skill development and empowerment, job creation and economic growth, financial literacy and management, innovation, and adaptability are the roles of entrepreneurship education in addressing financial insecurity. It was discovered that challenges faced in implementing entrepreneurship education in Nigeria comprised; limited resources and infrastructure, lack of awareness and cultural barriers, limited access to quality education, and policy and regulatory constraints. It was found that the strategies for integrating entrepreneurship education into the Nigerian educational
system include; curriculum integration, teacher training and capacity building, collaboration with industry and business sectors, access to funding and support, and awareness campaigns and advocacy. It was recommended among others that a comprehensive national entrepreneurship education policy should be implemented.
